VDA welcomes German Government’s decision on the National Development Plan
Wissmann: Electric mobility needs long-term planning
Electric propulsion is a key technology for the sustainable mobility of tomorrow. The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) therefore welcomes the fact that the German Government is fostering this technology of the future. "The National Development Plan for Electric Mobility is an important tool for promoting electric cars," said VDA President Matthias Wissmann. He was responding to today's Cabinet resolution that "the successful development of electric mobility is of great importance to Germany as a location for innovation."
Wissmann stressed that the most important requisite was long-term and reliable planning. "If this technology is to be viable in the future on the broad mass market, all those involved - the industry, the politicians and the energy sector - must pull together."
Electric mobility can make an important contribution to reducing CO2 emissions, the VDA president continued. Among the whole range of future powertrain concepts, electric cars are central to sustainable, forward-looking mobility. However, at the same time Wissmann warned against exaggerated expectations. From today's standpoint the classical powertrains - efficient gasoline and diesel engines - will secure individual mobility for a long transitional period. "The combustion engine is going to be around for a while yet - in fact, it is being improved all the time," Wissmann said.
