Area of Expertise in Climate, Environment & Sustainability
Economic success and sustainable action always go hand in hand. With this in mind, the department deals in various circles with all issues relating to environmental and climate protection in the automotive industry. In recent years, the main focus has been on issues relating to CO2 regulation for passenger cars and light and heavy commercial vehicles, materials law and the handling of end-of-life vehicles.
The German automotive industry is committed to the idea that responsibility for people and the environment does not end at the factory gate, but must be anchored throughout the entire supply chain. The VDA therefore supports its member companies in effectively implementing sustainability within the companies and throughout the entire life cycle of the vehicle: From the selection of materials, through production in Germany and fuel-efficient operation, to closing material loops at the end of the life cycle. Over the past two decades, German automakers have achieved enormous success in conserving resources in manufacturing.
The VDA is currently working with manufacturers and suppliers to develop a standardized testing and exchange mechanism for evaluating the sustainability performance of companies in the automotive supply chain and mutually recognizing the results. The joint approach is an integral part of implementing corporate due diligence in the automotive supply chain. The aim is to further develop sustainability in the industry. In addition, the VDA is actively involved in a German government initiative to support companies in presenting and implementing human rights due diligence in supply chains.
