Cooperate for a future-proof industry with skilled employees

The corona crisis has left deep cuts in large parts of industry in Germany and Europe and their value chains. Recession and transformation pose unprecedented challenges for the industry and its employees. The task now is to focus on the importance of a strong, competitive industry with a strong social partnership as the basis for securing prosperity in Germany and Europe.

At the conference organized by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), representatives from science, associations, labor unions, and politics discussed the situation of industry in Germany as well as measures to structurally strengthen competitiveness and secure qualified industrial jobs. The discussion was based on the study commissioned by the BMWi from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) as part of its Industrial Strategy 2030: "Analysis of industry-relevant economic conditions in Germany in an international comparison." This study confirms the need for action to improve key location factors in Germany already identified in the Strategy. It also contains further suggestions for the necessary course to be set for the future, as agreed by the alliance partners.

One central objective of the Industrial Strategy 2030 is to further improve the conditions for industry to open up the necessary perspectives for companies and to enable employees to have secure and good jobs. The Alliance for the Future of Industry is committed to ensuring that German industry can develop its performance on a national, European, and international level playing field. To this end, the alliance discussed various approaches with the aim of presenting concrete recommendations for action at the Industry Conference 2020.

Economic stimulus package as a strong response to current challenges

With its comprehensive economic stimulus and future package "Combating the effects of Corona, securing prosperity, strengthening future viability", the German government has provided a strong response to the current challenges. The package includes measures that provide short-term economic stimuli, but also contains instruments that will have an impact over the medium and long term and improve the structural prerequisites for further strengthening the performance of the German economy amongst the international competition. These include, for example, greater technology support, new impetus for the digitalization of the economy and measures to upgrade the skills of employees as part of the industrial transformation process. Many of the measures contained in the economic stimulus and future package are already laid out in the BMWi's Industrial Strategy 2030 and also correspond to previous recommendations for action by the partners of the Alliance for the Future of Industry.

Based also on the results of the IfW study, the Alliance sees a clear need for further measures to make public and private investment in Germany even more attractive in the medium and long term. Now more than ever, it is important to sustainably strengthen investments, innovation, employment, good working conditions, competitiveness, open markets, and economic dynamism in Germany and Europe.

The call goes out equally to EU member states and institutions

To revive Europe's economy, the new programs for recovery must also be used. This is also provided for in the Commission proposal. Agreement must be reached quickly on this.

The economic recovery plan must further strengthen the European single market as well as be closely linked to the content and objectives of the European Industrial Strategy, the Digital Strategy, and the European Green Deal.

The Alliance for the Future of Industry, in which 17 partners from labor unions, industry and employers' associations, the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce and the BMWi have been working together successfully since 2015, welcomes the dialog associated with the Industrial Strategy 2030. The Alliance will contribute to this process with proposals on how to overcome the corona pandemic and its consequences, safeguard economic substance, and preserve skilled jobs.

Members of this Alliance are the Bundesarbeitgeberverband Chemie (BAVC), Bundesvereinigung der Deutschen Arbeitgeberverbände (BDA), Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie (BDI), Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie (BMWi), Deutsche Gewerkschaftsbund (DGB), Deutsche Industrie- und Handelskammertag (DIHK), Hauptverband der Deutschen Bauindustrie (HDB), Gesamtmetall, IG Bauen-Agrar-Umwelt (IG BAU), IG Bergbau, Chemie, Energie (IG BCE), IG Metall, the labor union Nahrung-Genuss-Gaststätten (NGG), Verband der Chemischen Industrie (VCI), VDA, Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau (VDMA), Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl (WV Stahl), and the Zentralverband Elektrotechnik- und Elektronikindustrie (ZVEI).
