Domestic market starts new year well

Berlin, 03 February 2015

Strong rise in orders from Germany and abroad

In January 2015 a total of 211,000 passenger cars were newly registered in Germany. That represents growth of a good 2 percent compared with the same month last year. Incoming orders from Germany climbed even more strongly: in all, customers here ordered around 16 percent more new passenger cars than they did one year ago. Matthias Wissmann, President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), stressed, “That is a good start to 2015 – but we should not attach too much importance to this first month of the year.”

Last month the German manufacturers exported about 3 percent fewer passenger cars (332,100 units). However, January 2015 had one working day less (20 working days) than the same month in 2014. In addition, exports in January 2014 had been at the very high level of 343,400 units.

Incoming orders from other countries rose by more than 16 percent this January. Wissmann underscored, “The German manufacturers’ ‘model offensive’ is having a visible effect on many markets. The January rise means that we are already in the 15th month in succession with increasing orders from abroad.”

The German passenger car manufacturers slightly reduced their output last month. A total of 427,900 cars rolled off the production lines, which was almost 3 percent less than one year ago. Wissmann pointed out, “The smaller number of working days affects production and exports in particular. Here the strong end to 2014 is also significant. The continuing strength of incoming orders from other countries and the surprisingly keen rise in orders from the home market give us reason to be optimistic.”
