Sales of light trucks and cars grow faster than total market in April
The US market for light vehicles (passenger cars and light trucks) grew by almost 5 percent in April, to reach 1.45 million units. Yet the German manufacturers increased their sales by nearly 7 percent to 116,900 new vehicles, which means that they expanded faster than the market as a whole.
While the passenger car market in the US contracted slightly in April to just over 647,900 new vehicles (-1.4 percent), the German brands pushed up their car sales by 3 percent to 78,400 units. In the light truck segment, too – which rose by almost 11 percent last month to 800,400 units – the German manufacturers turned in better results, increasing their new vehicle sales by almost 16 percent.
Matthias Wissmann, President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), stressed, “It is especially welcome that the German manufacturers, who are traditionally strong in the passenger car segment, are now also expanding very rapidly with their attractive new models on the dynamic light truck market.”
German light vehicle sales total 424,300 new vehicles so far this year (+5.3 percent), rising with the same speed as the overall market with its 5.4 percent growth to nearly 5.4 million light vehicles. The market share going to the German manufacturers in the first four months equaled last year’s figure of 7.9 percent. In the passenger car segment, the German OEMs managed to increase their market share to 12.1 percent (cf. 11.5 percent in January to April 2014).
