Double-digit growth in March
The German commercial vehicle market recorded a strong first quarter. New registrations of commercial vehicles from January to March showed a marked 7 percent rise to 87,800 units. In March growth even reached double-figures, with 17 percent more commercial vehicles registered than in the same month last year, i.e. 37,500. Yet it should be remembered that March this year had two working days more than March 2016.
Results in the van segment continued to soar. Sales of light-duty commercial vehicles up to 6 tonnes rose by 8 percent in the first quarter to a total of 64,500 vehicles. Last month 27,500 vans were sold, pushing year-on-year growth to 18 percent.
In the heavy-duty segment over 6 tonnes, first-quarter growth came to 5 percent, with 21,600 new vehicles registered. In March 9,300 heavy trucks were registered – a rise of 15 percent.
The bus market was also booming. Sales from January to March expanded by 13 percent to reach 1,600 units. In March 700 new buses were registered (+22 percent). New trailer registrations also increased. In the first quarter 74,100 trailers were registered (+13 percent), including 9,800 semitrailers (+11 percent).
Production of light-duty commercial vehicles climbed again in March (+15 percent). Exports added 8 percent. In the first quarter of this year production dropped to 76,500 and exports were down to 56,900 vehicles. The decreases were due to a model change and the ramp-up of production in Poland at the end of 2016.
