“The German automotive industry welcomes Emmanuel Macron’s victory in the first round of the French presidential election. This means that a young and committed supporter of the market economy has come to the fore, who stands for a European France. Furthermore, he has set himself the goal of making both France and Europe more competitive. We know from discussions with Macron that he knows and understands in detail the challenges facing industry – and especially the automotive industry – in Europe. We wish him success in the final vote on May 7. If Macron were to become France’s new President, that would be a clear vote for a social market economy and for Europe – and a rejection of protectionism and isolation.
It is welcome news that the majority of the French electorate has voted against the nationalist and protectionist arguments of Marine le Pen. The first round of the French election has also shown that there is no majority support for the anti-market-economy positions of the extreme Left and Right,” stressed Matthias Wissmann, President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA).
