Wissmann: Macron stands for a European France

Berlin, 08 May 2017

Automotive industry hopes for continued intensification of cooperation between German and French companies

The result of the French presidential election drew the following comments from Matthias Wissmann, President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA):

“The German automotive industry congratulates Emmanuel Macron on his election as President of the French Republic. The French electorate has produced a clear majority for the candidate who stands for an open and optimistic France that sees its place as being at the heart of Europe. We are also pleased about the result because France and Germany have a special relationship – politically, socially and economically. We hope that Emmanuel Macron will now encourage intensification of the cooperation between companies in our two countries – and in the automotive sector in particular. We know from discussions with him that he is aware of and understands the challenges facing the European industry, especially the automotive industry. By electing Emmanuel Macron the voters have come out decisively in favor of a young supporter of the social market economy. He has set himself the goal of improving the competitiveness both of France and of Europe. We assume that he will now actively drive forward reforms in his country and in Europe.”
