Domestic production and exports also on the rise
In May new registrations of passenger cars in Germany grew by 13 percent to 324,000 units. However, it should be remembered that May had two working days more this year than it did in 2016. This year so far, nearly 1.5 million cars have been newly registered in Germany (+5 percent).
Sales of diesel passenger cars in May showed a tiny year-on-year fall (of 1 percent), while 40.4 percent of all new car registrations were of diesels (46.3 percent in May 2016). In the first five months of 2017, diesels accounted for 41.9 percent of the market (47.1 percent in Jan.-May 2016).
Domestic production increased strongly in May, reaching 482,400 new vehicles (+8 percent). A good 2.4 million passenger cars have been built since the beginning of this year (-1 percent).
Orders from within Germany showed double-digit growth in May (+10 percent), while orders arriving from abroad added 3 percent.
May also saw a positive trend in passenger car exports, which totaled 369,400 units (+7 percent). Since January the German auto manufacturers have supplied around 1.9 million cars to international customers, thus equaling last year’s figure.
