Wissmann: IAA’s dominant theme is digitization

Berlin, 31 August 2017

Again over 50 brands of cars – Glittering display of over 300 premieres – New Mobility World with Facebook as Partner – IAA slogan “Future now” – Google, Qualcomm and many others at the New Mobility World

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is my pleasure to welcome you most warmly to our pre-IAA press conference. I am delighted that so many journalists from Europe, North and South America and Asia are taking part.

We are looking forward to the IAA full of enthusiastic anticipation. At exactly the right time it will bring together all the players who shape the mobility of the future. The preparations for the 67th IAA Cars, which will take place in Frankfurt am Main from September 14 to 24, are running at full speed. The main focus will be on digitization. The cars of the future will be connected and automated. The slogan of this IAA, “Future now,” ties in with this. The IAA will be opened on September 14 by Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The IAA showcases the entire range of mobility innovations, from digitization and electric mobility all the way to new mobility concepts, especially those designed for urban areas.

No other automotive trade fair focuses so strongly on digitization as the IAA. The largest IT and technology firms will have a highly visible presence in Frankfurt:

  • Facebook is the New Mobility World Partner – COO Sheryl Sandberg will speak at the IAA opening ceremony.
  • Google is Platinum Partner for the Media Night that will be held on the evening of the first Press Day.
  • Carlo D’Asaro Biondo, President of Southern & Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa Operations at Google Inc., will be the keynote speaker at the Media Night.
  • SAP and Google will be prominently represented at the New Mobility World.
  • The chip giant Qualcomm will also be exhibiting at the IAA/New Mobility World, and CEO Steve Mollenkopf will deliver a keynote address.

The other IT and technology companies at the IAA include BlaBlaCar, Harman, IBM, International Industries, Kaspersky, Merck, NXP, Siemens, Sony, TomTom, Telekom, Allianz and McKinsey, and of course the Daimler subsidiaries Moovel, MyTaxi and Car2Go, along with the VW subsidiary Moia.

This all indicates that the technology and IT firms are using the IAA specifically as a platform. This is where high-tech players and automotive firms meet.

Like the automobile itself, trade shows have to re-invent themselves over and over.

The IAA highlights just how the world of mobility is changing. As the organizer of the IAA Cars, the VDA has been continuously and consistently developing the world’s most important mobility trade fair for years.

The vehicle manufacturers long ago started seeing themselves as mobility service providers, and they invest heavily in digitization and electric mobility.

The digital significance of the IAA is also underscored by the fact that South by Southwest (SXSW from Austin, Texas) and Mercedes-Benz in Frankfurt are jointly organizing their first “meConvention.” This conference is intended to provide new impetus for the social discourse on relevant future-related topics.

In addition, BMW will host the pioneering thinkers’ platform TED, where the finalists in the “Next Visionaries” contest will outline their visions for the future of mobility.

We welcome this of course, because it ties in perfectly with the New Mobility World, the transformation of our sector, and the IAA!

The New Mobility World is the IAA’s additional format for all new players in the world of mobility, specifically bringing together innovators from all sectors who develop new solutions, technologies or products for the mobility of tomorrow and beyond.

A total of over 250 companies and organizations will be represented at the New Mobility World. The most innovative international startups will do battle in the “NMW Lab17” startup competition. The New Mobility World will use a range of presentation formats in Hall 3.1 and will run until September 17. This makes it the large, international discussion forum for the exciting forward-looking mobility topics.

Facebook, Google, SAP and Qualcomm are proof of how the IAA is changing and driving new trends forward.

The fact that major IT and technology firms have decided to take part in the IAA and the New Mobility World emphasizes the standing of the IAA as a leading trade show.

Visitors will be able to experience the New Mobility World not only in the hall, but also on the central outdoor site called the “Agora.” It has a large open-air area for the action program, where OEMs and suppliers will demonstrate their automated and digitized driving programs. The participating firms include Audi, Daimler, Volkswagen, and the major suppliers Bosch, Continental and ZF.

Those who define the mobility of the future will be at the IAA Cars!

The IAA visitor advertising is accordingly breaking new ground. The focus is on people – with their questions about the future, their desires and demands for the mobility of tomorrow. I invite you to watch the campaign film on our new IAA website www.iaa.de.

The IAA’s orientation – international and digital

The VDA has been implementing its strategy for the IAA for many years: consistently international and digital. We are the ones who set the trend and have done the pioneering work. Other motor shows have followed our lead.

We continue to organize the IAA so that in Frankfurt what belongs together grows together.

Around 1,000 exhibitors have registered for the IAA, which is a very good figure. The exhibition space comes to nearly 200,000 square meters. This year, we will have slightly less space on the open-air site than we had in 2015 because the previous outdoor area is now a construction site where the new Hall 12 will be built in time for the next IAA in 2019. You can look forward to a large number of exciting and varied premieres at the IAA 2017. The latest figures suggest about the same high number as in 2015. New registrations are still arriving every day. This means that at the IAA we can all look forward a glittering display with more than 300 innovations being premiered, and we will publish the exact figures shortly before the show opens.

I am certain that all visitors who are enthusiastic about mobility and automobiles, people who have a general interest in mobility, and those who have so far been skeptical, can look forward to a wonderful, very exciting IAA! Our industry, our exhibitors, want to convince the many IAA visitors, and naturally you too, the media representatives, of their capabilities and their solutions for the mobility of today and tomorrow, and to win you over for what they have to offer.

The exhibitorsnew players from China – several hundred suppliers

Once again, over 50 brands of passenger cars have registered for the IAA, including the largest car makers from Europe, the US and Asia. McLaren is returning to the IAA (Agora) after a break of many years.

Furthermore, new Chinese manufacturers (WEY and Chery) will be at the IAA for the first time. They have specifically chosen this leading trade fair for their presentations, which underscores the international reputation and attractiveness of the IAA. And that is still increasing: for the first time exhibitors will be joining us from Egypt, Finland and Peru.

Several hundred suppliers will be exhibiting at the IAA, including returning firms such as the ThyssenKrupp group, (that last exhibited in 2007) and BorgWarner (that last participated in 2011). Only the IAA shows on such a comprehensive scale the innovations and the performance of suppliers from all over the world, which account for 75 percent of a vehicle’s value creation.

At earlier IAAs, too, now and again there were exhibitors who for their own reasons were unable to take part in the IAA – and returned the next time. We respect their decisions, analyze their individual reasons and continue developing the IAA, and with this experience we are confident that we will be welcoming not only our newly acquired customers, but also these returning companies, to the next IAA Cars 2019 – for numerous interested visitors.

The reasons for this are these:

  • No other trade fair has a larger international media presence – over 10,000 journalists from over 100 countries will report on the IAA.
  • Only the IAA presents the entire value chain to trade visitors and final customers.
  • No other motor show presents such a wide range of ideas and forums dedicated to the forward-looking topics of digitization, connected and automated driving, electric mobility and urban mobility.

The IAA 2017 offers exceptional opportunities for the automotive industry

The IAA 2017 is pushing forward. As much disruption, innovation and dialog as possible! The most important mobility trade show in the world has long since developed into more than simply a motor show. It reflects the large number of facets, players and opportunities in the mobility of tomorrow. That is the clear signal issued by exhibitors and the trade show organizer this year in Frankfurt.

So this will be an IAA like no previous one. Some visitors will find it off-putting, many will find it inspiring, and all of them will find it surprising, because it is always an experiment. A well-designed beta version. An invitation to discussions in extremely confusing times. A courageous bet on the future. The IAA cannot be anything else in 2017.
