This is a good initial signal for Europe. The German Government and the EU should continue the dialog now at the highest political level. The next few weeks will be decisive. They must be used for intensive talks with the US in order to reach lasting and reliable agreements. In the long term we need solutions based on the principles of the WTO.
The political and economic partnership with the US has to be secured, while at the same time every effort should be made to ensure accessible markets and avoid protectionism. Free and fair trade around the world is hugely important to business competitiveness.
In addition, work on a transatlantic free trade agreement should be resumed so that barriers to trade can be eliminated – on both sides.
