Two Important IAA Symposia: Load Safety and Hazardous Goods Day

Berlin, 13 August 2018

Application of the newest load-securing methods in theory and practice – legal regulations concerning the transport of lithium-ion batteries

Day for day over 10 million tonnes of goods are transported by road; these goods are transported quickly, efficiently and punctually from door to door – and in an ecologically sound way. To accomplish this safely and reliably, appropriate load-securing systems are indispensable. Inadequate load safety – or the absence of load- securing – can cause accidents in which human beings are injured and there is damage to vehicles and transported goods. For this reason, the task of guaranteeing – and continuously improving – load safety is a central concern for all parties involved.

The IAA Commercial Vehicles has been focusing attention on this topic for 14 years now. With the joint IAA event "Load Safety: Practical Experience for Practical Benefit" to be held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Monday, 24 Sept. 2018, in Room 2 of the Convention Center (CC), Verband der Automobilindustrie (VDA) and Bundesverband Güterkraftverkehr Logistik und Entsorgung (BGL) are again stressing the high importance transport companies and manufacturers of commercial vehicles, trailers and bodies attach to the topic of load safety. By applying the newest methods when loading and securing goods to be transported by road, these important players make an important contribution to quality assurance in transport companies and to the further improvement of safety in road traffic.

VDA President Bernhard Mattes and BGL President Adalbert Wandt will open the Symposium. "Technical Control Regulation and Its Implementation" will be discussed by both Police Commissioner Holger Lemmer, State Office for Central Police Services (LZPD), North Rhine-Westphalia, and Klaus Pöpping, Federal Office for Goods Transport (BAG), Regional Coordinator Road, Cologne.

Dipl.-Ing Wolfgang Bühren, publicly appointed and sworn expert for the Chamber of Commerce & Industry (IHK) "Lippe zu Detmold," will elaborate on "Methods for Testing the Safety of Load Units in Intermodal Transport." Katharina Kermelk, BPW Bergische Achsen KG, Wiehl, has chosen the topic of "Intelligent Load Safety: iGurt & Cargo Space Monitoring." Dipl.-Ing. Uwe Schöbel, Dolezych GmbH & Co. KG, Detmold, will give a lecture entitled "A Concise, Simplified and Exciting Presentation on Load Safety."

The subject of "Load Safety of Tires” will be addressed by three speakers: Bart van Rens, Ewals Cargo Care, Tegelen/Netherlands; Simone Fankhauser, B.S. Eng., Fahrzeugwerk Bernard Krone GmbH & Co. KG; and Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Bernd Thiede, Schmitz Cargobull AG, Altenberge.

The topic of "Load Safety of Roll Containers" will be dealt with by Dipl.-Ing. Uwe Semsch, DEKRA Automobil GmbH, Bielefeld; Dipl.-Ing. Gerrit Hasselmann, Fraunhofer Institute IML, Dortmund; und Uwe Dominik, Dominik GmbH & Co. KG, Osnabrück.

A paper on "The Load Safety of Soft Packaging on Road Vehicles – Status Report on Directive VDI 2700 Page 18" will be presented by Wolfgang Neumann, Eurosafe GmbH, Hanau while Dipl.-VwW (FH) Alfred Lampen, Rastede, will explain "LaSikon – The Dictionary of Load Safety."

The Symposium will be chaired by Gerhard Grünig, Editor-in-Chief of VerkehrsRundschau.

The talks and lectures will be followed by a practical demonstration on "Load Safety of Automotive Tires" at the IAA Convention Center. Bart van Rens, Ewalds Cargo Care; Simone Fankhauser, Krone; and Bernd Thiede, Schmitz Cargobull, will act as moderators during the demonstration.

Persons interested in attending the IAA Symposium "Load Safety: Practical Experience for Practical Benefit" can register online at Admission is free of charge.

A second well-attended IAA Symposium will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 25 Sept. 2018, in Room 2 of the Convention Center (CC). This event, which is entitled "Current Developments in Hazardous Goods Law and Improving the Safety of Hazardous Goods," will be held jointly by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure" (BMVI) and VDA.

With the steady advance of globalization, international trade – and consequently the transport of hazardous goods – is expanding as well. The Symposium will provide information on the state of the art, on technical innovations and on the future development of this sector. The topics mentioned above will be discussed by experts from politics, science, commerce and industry. The keynote speech will be given by VDA Managing Director Dr. Joachim Damasky. Besides the lectures on current hazardous goods law and its practical handling (Jochen Conrad, Head of the Hazardous Goods Department OTIF, Bern/Switzerland; Uwe Kraft, Bremen Harbor Office; Gudula Schwan, Deputy Head of the Section for the Transport of Hazardous Goods, BMVI), the focus will be on various aspects of the transport of lithium and lithium-ion batteries (Dr. Anita Schmidt, German Institute for Materials Research and Testing, BAM, Berlin). Another speaker (Rainer Kogelheide, VPI, Hamburg) will be taking a look at the future law on type approvals and tank inspections. Checks carried out at the land-sea interface (Lutz Dreyer, Harbor Police, Hamburg) will be another important topic. Furthermore, practical explanations will be provided on the current changes in the provisions of the Ordinance on the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road, Rail and Inland Waterways. Information will also be supplied on portable printers (Dr.-Ing. Christian Balke, BAM, Berlin).

The Symposium will be chaired by Helmut Rein, BMVI. Persons interested in attending the Hazardous Good Day can register online at Admission is free of charge.
