International passenger car markets vary in November

Berlin, 14 December 2018

Europe, China and US contract – Japan, Brazil and Russia expand

Whereas many international automotive markets have expanded overall since the beginning of this year, developments in November varied. Europe (EU28 + EFTA), China and the US contracted, while Japan, Brazil and Russia expanded.

In all 14.6 million passenger cars were newly registered on the European market up to the end of November, which is around 1 percent more than in the same period last year. November saw a year-on-year fall of 8 percent to 1.2 million new vehicles. The five largest individual markets all contracted. Single-figure decreases occurred in the United Kingdom (-3 percent), France (-5 percent) and Italy (-6 percent), while the slump was greater in Germany (-10 percent) and Spain (-13 percent).

November sales on the US light vehicle market eased off somewhat compared with 2017 (-1 percent) and came to 1.4 million new vehicles. Sales of light trucks rose by 6 percent, while the car segment lost 14 percent. The proportion of light trucks among all light vehicle sales increased to 71.2 percent. The market now has a year-to-date total of 15.6 million light vehicles, which equals last year’s level.

In China sales of passenger cars fell sharply in November. The volume of 2.1 million vehicles was around 16 percent down on last year’s figure. Since January 21.1 million new vehicles have been sold in China (-2 percent).

The Indian passenger car market gained 6 percent in the first eleven months of 2018, growing to around 3.2 million new cars. In November it lost just over 3 percent and amounted to 266,000 new vehicles.

The Japanese new car business showed strong growth last month. The 357,300 passenger cars sold represented a rise of 7 percent. A total of 4.1 million passenger cars were sold up to and including November (±0 percent).

The Russian light vehicle market added 10 percent in November, recording a volume of 167,500 vehicles. This took domestic sales since the beginning of this year to 1.6 million new vehicles, i.e. 14 percent above last year’s level.

In Brazil, November sales of light vehicles reached 221,800. That was a good 12 percent more than in November 2017. So far this year the accumulated market has slightly exceeded the 2.2 million mark, expanding by 14 percent.
