German passenger car market increases in February

Berlin, 04 March 2019

Domestic incoming orders rise – Production and exports remain stable

New registrations of passenger cars in Germany rose by 3 percent in February 2019, reaching 268,800 units. The first two months of this year brought a rise of 1 percent over 2018. The proportion of diesel cars has risen slightly since the beginning of this year to 33.5 percent (32.9 percent in 2018).

Orders arriving from Germany showed another sharp year-on-year rise in February. Domestic customers ordered 21 percent more passenger cars than they did one year ago. It was the second month in succession with a double-digit increase in orders. Foreign orders shrank by 8 percent.

The German manufacturers built 440,900 passenger cars in February (-1 percent). Since January, 814,000 units have been produced (-10 percent). Exports remained stable last month, totaling 348,500 units, which meant as many brand new passenger cars were supplied to customers around the world as in February 2018. This year so far, 636,900 vehicles have been exported (-10 percent).
