International automotive markets weaker in February

Berlin, 15 March 2019

Slight falls in Europe and US – Marked losses in China

In February the international automotive markets showed weaker development. The European passenger car market (EU28+EFTA) hovered just below its result from February last year. US light vehicle sales fell slightly, while China recorded a more marked drop in its figures.

In Europe a good 1.1 million new passenger cars were registered in February, i.e. 1 percent fewer than in the same month last year. Positive results were seen principally on the large-volume markets in Germany (+3 percent), France (+2 percent) and the United Kingdom (+1 percent). The figures were down in Italy (-2 percent) and Spain (-9 percent). In the first two months of this year, the volume of new registrations in Europe reached almost 2.4 million passenger cars (-3 percent).

Light vehicle sales in the US lost 2 percent in February, down to just under 1.3 million vehicles. The passenger car segment contracted by 11 percent, while sales of light trucks rose by 2 percent. After two months, year-to-date sales in the US now total 2.4 million light vehicles (-2 percent).

The market volume in China contracted in February, as it did in January, by 17 percent, falling to 1.2 million passenger cars. This year so far 3.2 million passenger cars have been sold (-17 percent).

In India 272,300 passenger cars were sold last month, which was around 1 percent less than in the same month last year. The market volume of 552,400 passenger cars in the first two months leaves sales in India roughly 1 percent below last year’s level.

A total of 401,400 passenger cars were sold on the Japanese market in February, which matched the 2018 result. Year-to-date sales amount to 743,900 passenger cars, also equaling last year’s level.

The Russian light vehicle market lost 4 percent in February, reaching a volume of 128,400 units. Since January 231,500 new vehicles have been sold in Russia (-2 percent).

The Brazilian light vehicle market soared last month, totaling 190,300 vehicles sold (+25 percent). This was the strongest market growth since April 2018. The year-to-date volume is now 381,500 light vehicles sold, which represents growth of 16 percent.
