Statement delivered by VDA President Mattes on the decision by US President on postponing a decision on import tariffs

Berlin, 17 May 2019

“The period of 180 days must now be used for intensive work on reaching good results in the negotiations between the EU and the US. Import tariffs or quotas would be equally limiting to international trade. They are damaging to all companies and customers in the countries concerned and are detrimental to welfare. These two large economic areas need each other. The transatlantic negotiations must aim to expand the possibilities for free and fair trade and ensure accessible markets on all sides. The success of the German automotive industry is largely based on free access to the markets.”
