German passenger car market grows in May

Berlin, 04 June 2019

Production rises slightly – Exports fall

The German passenger car market grew by 9 percent in May, totaling 333,000 newly registered cars. However, May had two more working days this year than in 2018. It will be more informative to compare the months of May and June together, as this year June will have three working days less than it did in 2018. This year 1.5 million passenger cars have so far been newly registered, which equates to a rise of 2 percent.

Incoming orders from Germany added around 8 percent in May. Since January domestic customers have ordered nearly 8 percent more passenger cars than in the same period last year. Orders from abroad lost 10 percent, and the year-to-date figure is down by 7 percent.

The German OEMs built 445,700 passenger cars in May, a year-on-year rise of 2 percent. From January to May, 2.1 million new cars rolled off the production lines (-10 percent). Exports failed to match the result from May last year. A total of 328,000 brand new passenger cars were supplied to customers around the world (-3 percent). After five months, the German OEMs had exported 1.6 million cars, i.e. 12 percent less than last year.
