Very close race – Each city shows great commitment and creative ideas – Final decision on the IAA’s 2021 venue expected in the coming weeks
Statement issued by the Managing Board of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA):
We are delighted by the huge interest in the new IAA. Following intensive preparatory work that began in October 2019, seven cities have put forward new concepts and ideas. On January 23 and 24, 2020, Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, Hannover, Cologne, Munich and Stuttgart all presented their concepts for the new IAA to the VDA and its member companies.
This was followed by comprehensive evaluation of the presentations.
Every one of these cities has very creative and ambitious ideas. They underscore the fact that each of the seven has its own profile and its own strengths. It is a very close race with high performance across the board.
At its meeting today, the VDA’s Managing Board gave careful consideration to the various concepts and ideas, and decided to continue discussions with Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, and to launch specific contractual negotiations. A decision on which city will host the IAA from 2021 onward is expected in the coming weeks.
The contest to host the IAA 2021 has only winners. During the process, every city has developed interesting ideas for improving urban and sustainable mobility in its region.
The ideas and concepts submitted by Frankfurt am Main were also very impressive. Yet after evaluation of all the relevant criteria, the IAA 2021 will not be held in Frankfurt am Main. This was not an easy decision for the VDA’s Managing Board. Frankfurt am Main has been the venue of the IAA for almost 70 years, and internationally this was frequently expressed in the unofficial name “Frankfurt Motor Show.” The VDA wishes to thank both the city of Frankfurt and Messe Frankfurt for this long-lasting, very good and trusting partnership.
Furthermore, the German Association of the Automotive Industry thanks all the cities that took part in the contest to host the IAA in 2021 for their great commitment and the creativity of their ideas.
