New registrations decrease again in June, production and export increase

    Berlin, July 04, 2022

Production and exports confirm the trend of the previous month and increase sharply in June – but the market and production are still well below the pre-COVID19 level

In Germany, 224,600 passenger cars were newly registered in June. That is a good 18% less than in the same month last year. A total of 1.2mn new vehicles were registered in the first six months, 11% fewer than in the same period of the previous year. Compared to the pre-COVID19 year 2019, there is a sales deficit of 33% in the current year. The lack of primary and intermediate products, high raw material prices and general uncertainty due to the ongoing war in Ukraine continue to limit the market and production.

New electric vehicle registrations fell by 10% in June to a good 58,500 units. The decline was therefore less severe than that of the market as a whole. The share of electric cars in all new registrations was 26% in the past month. New registrations of purely battery-electric passenger cars (BEV) fell by 4%, while those of plug-in hybrids (PHEV) fell by 16%. A total of 306,400 electric cars have been registered since the beginning of the year, 2% fewer than in the same period of the previous year.

Domestic order intake fell again in June and was 15% below the same month last year. Since the beginning of the year, however, 4% more orders have been received than in the first six months of last year. Incoming orders from abroad developed negatively: German manufacturers booked 2% fewer orders in June than in the same month last year. In the first half of 2022, a total of 14% fewer orders were received from customers from abroad.

Passenger car production in Germany increased in June for the second month in a row. German manufacturers produced 302,500 cars (+19%). Since the beginning of the year, 1.7mn passenger cars have been produced in Germany, 3% less than in the first half of the previous year. However, the production level from before COVID19 is still far away: The production volume in June 2022 was 19% below that in June 2019 and the production volume in the current year is still 32% below the comparative value for 2019.

With 237,000 new vehicles exported, exports in June were 22% above the previous year's level. In the course of the year, however, exports were still below the level of the previous year with a minus of 5% and 1.3mn units.
