Press release
Passenger car production in first half of year above previous year's level – New registrations under pressure due to special effect in previous year – Still significantly below pre-crisis levels - New electric vehicle registrations grow despite declining overall market
In June, domestic passenger car production reached a volume of 359,700 units. This was 3% more than in the same month last year. Domestic passenger car production thus grew for the second consecutive month. In the first half of 2025, a total of almost 2.2mn passenger cars were manufactured in Germany, an increase of 4% compared to the same period last year. However, compared to the pre-crisis year of 2019, production after six months of the current year is still almost 13% below that level.
Exports also increased last month: In June, 274,700 brand-new cars were exported from production facilities in Germany, 5% more than in the same month last year. Since January, almost 1.7mn new cars have been exported, 3% more than in the same period last year. However, exports after the first half of the year are still 10% below the pre-crisis level of 2019.
Compared to the same month last year, 8% fewer domestic orders were recorded in June of this year. Incoming orders from abroad, however, increased noticeably and are a good 5% above the previous year's level. Overall – taking domestic and foreign orders combined – orders were recorded 3% more last month than in the same period last year. After the first half of 2025, incoming orders are exactly at the previous year's level (±0%).
Market development: Due to a high comparison value from the previous year, new car registrations in the German passenger car market fell sharply last month, with the number of car registrations falling by 14% to 256,200 units in June compared to the same month last year. It should not go unmentioned, however, that June 2024 benefited from a special effect: the implementation of a new EU type-approval regulation from July 2024 led to early new registrations. This particularly affected vehicles that were not yet equipped with the assistance systems required by the new EU regulation. In the first half of 2025, a total of 1.40mn new passenger cars were newly registered. This is 5% fewer than in the first six months of the previous year. The German passenger car market thus remains significantly below the level of 2019: Compared with the first half of the last pre-COVID year, new car registrations in Germany are currently 24%, or around 446,200 units, below the volume at that time.
The German electric car market recorded further growth in June despite the weak overall market performance. New registrations of electric vehicles (BEVs, PHEVs, FCEVs) rose by 24% to a volume of 72,800 units. In the first half of this year, the German electric car market grew by 42%, reaching a volume of 387,700 new registrations. In detail: In June, registrations of purely battery-electric cars (BEVs) rose by almost 9% to 47,200 units. New registrations of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) recorded strong growth of 66%, reaching a volume of 25,600 vehicles. For the year as a whole, new BEV registrations increased by 35% to 248,700 units. The PHEV segment grew even more strongly over the course of the year, increasing by 55%. Thus 138,900 PHEVs were newly registered in Germany in the first half of the year.
