    Car production declined in August

    Statement

    Berlin, September 02, 2025

Factory holidays and one less working day dampened production - new car registrations increase - more new e-vehicle registrations compared to previous year

In August, 237,600 passenger cars were produced in Germany (–21%). The significant decline compared to the same month last year was primarily due to the factory holidays, which this year largely fell in August. In addition, there was one fewer working day than in the same month last year. In the first eight months of the year, almost 2.8mn passenger cars were produced in Germany. This is 2% more than in the same period last year. Compared to the pre-crisis year of 2019, production after eight months of the current year was still 12% below.

Exports also fell below the previous year's level last month: In August, 177,700 brand-new cars were exported from production facilities in Germany (–24%). Since January, 2.1mn new cars have been exported, the same number as in the same period last year. After eight months, exports are 11% below the pre-crisis level of 2019.

Compared to the same month last year, almost 4% fewer domestic orders were registered in August of this year. Incoming orders from abroad in August were 3% below previous year's level. Overall - domestic and foreign orders combined - around 3% fewer orders were recorded in August than in the same period last year. After the first eight months, total incoming orders are 1% lower than in the first eight months of 2024.

In August 2025, more new vehicles were registered in the German passenger car market than in the same month last year: The number of passenger car registrations rose by 5% to a volume of 207,200 units. A total of 1,874,800 new passenger cars were registered in the eight months of the current year. This is 2% fewer than in the same period last year. Compared to the pre-crisis year of 2019, the German passenger car market continues to lag significantly behind: The current market volume is one quarter lower than that year.

The German electric car market again recorded significant growth in August. New registrations of electric vehicles (BEVs, PHEVs, FCEVs) rose by 56% compared to August of the previous year, reaching a volume of 63,400 units. Last month, with an electric share of 30.6%, the highest figure for new registrations so far this year was reached. Year-to-date, the German electric car market has grown by 46%, reaching a volume of 526,800 new registrations. In detail: In August, registrations of purely battery-electric cars (BEVs) rose by 46% to 39,400 units. New registrations of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) recorded growth of around 77%, reaching 24,000 vehicles. Accordingly, new BEV registrations increased by 39% to 336,700 units over the course of the year. The PHEV segment grew by 61% compared to the first eight months of 2024, reaching a volume of 190,100 vehicles in the current year.
