    Berlin, November 04, 2025

New car registrations up - new electric vehicle registrations continue with strong growth

Domestic passenger car production in Germany amounted to 353,600 units in October. Compared to the same month last year, this represents a decrease of 4%. In the first 10 months of this year, 3.5mn passenger cars (+1%) rolled off domestic assembly lines. This means that production so far this year is still 12% below the level of the pre-crisis year 2019.

Exports fell just short of the previous year's figure last month. The 277,500 brand-new passenger cars exported from German production facilities represented a decline of 1%. From January to October, passenger car exports reached 2.7mn units, matching the previous year's level. After ten months, exports were still 10% below the pre-crisis level of 2019.

Domestic orders rose by 2% in October compared to the same month last year. At the same time, foreign orders were almost 10% lower than the previous year. However, fluctuations are normal, as a look at the year-to-date figures shows: After ten months, foreign orders are only 2% below the corresponding period of the previous year. Overall – combining domestic and foreign orders – 8% fewer orders were registered in October than in October of the previous year. Year-to-date, total order intake is 1% below the level of the first ten months of the previous year.

In October 2025, more new passenger cars were registered on the German market than in the same month of the previous year. Compared to the same month of the previous year, the number of new passenger car registrations rose by 8% to a volume of 250,100 units. In the first ten months of the year, a total of 2.4 million passenger cars were newly registered. This represents a 1% increase in new registrations compared to the same period of the previous year. However, the German passenger car market remains significantly below the level of 2019: In the first ten months of the last pre-pandemic year, new passenger car registrations in Germany were still 22%, or around 664,300 units, higher than the current figure.

The German electric car market once again recorded significant growth. Last month, new registrations of electric vehicles (BEVs, PHEVs, FCEVs) rose by 52% to 83,390 units, the highest October figure to date. So far this year, the German electric car market is up 47%, reaching a volume of 683,400 new registrations.

In detail: In October, registrations of purely battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) rose by 48% to 52,430 units. New registrations of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) saw growth of 60%, reaching 30,950 vehicles. For the year to date, this translates to a 39% increase in new BEV registrations to 434,600 units. The PHEV segment grew by 63%, reaching a volume of 248,700 vehicles in the past ten months.
