New car registrations up - new electric vehicle registrations showing strong growth
Domestic passenger car production in Germany reached 398,500 units in November, representing a 2% increase compared to the same month last year. In the past eleven months, 3.9mn passenger cars (+1%) rolled off domestic assembly lines. This means that production so far this year is 11% below the level of the pre-crisis year of 2019.
Exports fell short of the previous year's figure last month. The 292,200 brand-new passenger cars exported from German production facilities represented a decline of 1%. From January to November, passenger car exports reached a total of 3.0mn units, matching the previous year's level. After eleven months, exports were still 9% below the pre-crisis level of 2019.
Domestic orders rose by 9% in November compared to the same month last year. At the same time, foreign orders were 10% lower than the previous year. Overall, 8% fewer orders were registered in November than a year ago. From January to November, total order intake was just under 2% below the figure for the same period last year.
In November 2025, more new passenger cars were registered on the German market than in the same month of the previous year. Compared to the same month of the previous year, the number of passenger car registrations rose by 3% to a volume of 250,700 units. In the eleven months of the year, a total of 2.6mn passenger cars were newly registered. The number of new registrations increased by 1% compared to the previous year. The German passenger car market thus remains significantly below the level of 2019: In the past eleven months, around 712,700 fewer units were newly registered in Germany, which corresponds to a decrease of approximately 21% compared to the same period of the last pre-pandemic year.
The German electric car market once again recorded significant growth. Last month, new registrations of electric vehicles (BEVs, PHEVs, FCEVs) rose by 58% to a volume of 88,200 units. The share of electric vehicles in the past month was 35.2% – the highest figure this year.
So far this year, the German market for electric passenger cars has grown by 48%, reaching a volume of 771,600 new registrations. Comparing these new registrations in the past eleven months with 2022, the previous record year for electric passenger car registrations, they were also 17% higher, or approximately 112,300 units higher, than three years ago.
In November, registrations of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) rose by 59% to 55,700 units. New registrations of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) saw growth of 57%, reaching 32,400 vehicles. Year-to-date, this corresponds to a 41% increase in new BEV registrations to 490,400 units. The PHEV segment grew by 63%, reaching a volume of 281,100 vehicles in the past eleven months.
