Production and Market in February 2026
Domestic car production slightly up in February
Press Release
New car registrations rising - new e-car registrations experiencing strong growth - domestic orders are up – but production and market levels unfortunately remain significantly below pre-crisis levels
Domestic passenger car production in Germany amounted to 358,600 units in February. Compared to the same month last year, this represents an increase of 1%. After the first two months, 664,300 passenger cars were manufactured in Germany, 4% fewer than in the same period last year. Thus the output remained significantly below the pre-crisis level: Production after the first two months of the year is 18% below the figure for the pre-crisis year of 2019.
Exports remained at the previous year's level in February, with 271,300 units. Since January, 490,500 passenger cars have been exported, 5% fewer than in the same period last year. After two months of this year, exports are still 22% below the pre-crisis level of 2019.
Domestic orders increased by 13% in February compared to the same month last year. At the same time, foreign orders were 7% lower than the previous year. Combining domestic and foreign orders, 4% fewer orders were registered in February than in the same month last year.
In February, more vehicles were newly registered on the German passenger car market than in the same month last year: Compared to February 2025, the number of passenger car registrations rose by 4% to a volume of 211,300 units. In the first two months of the year, a total of 405,200 units were newly registered, 1% fewer than in the corresponding period last year. This means the German passenger car market remains significantly below the 2019 level: In the first two months of this year, 129,300 fewer vehicles were newly registered than in the first two months of 2019, the last year before the coronavirus pandemic. This corresponds to a decline of 24%.
New registrations of electric vehicles (BEVs, PHEVs, FCEVs) rose by 27% last month to 70,600 units. In the first two months of the year, the electric passenger car market reached a volume of 135,100 units, an increase of 25% compared to the first two months of the previous year. The share of electric vehicles in total registrations in February of this year was 33%, meaning that every third new registration last month was an electric passenger car. Specifically, registrations of purely battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) increased by 29% to 46,300 units. New registrations of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) saw growth of 25% to 24,300 vehicles. This translates to a 26% increase in new BEV registrations for the year, reaching 89,000 units. The PHEV segment grew by 24%, reaching a volume of 46,100 vehicles in the first two months of this year.
