Totalling 261,300 new registrations, the passenger car market in Germany contracted once again – after a slight upturn last month. May sales of new cars showed a year-on-year fall of nearly 10 per cent. However, this year May had one working day less than the same month in 2012. Since the beginning of this year new registrations have decreased by around 9 per cent to a good 1.2 million vehicles. The difficult economic situation in Western Europe and the lack of consumer confidence due to the European state debt crisis are obviously continuing to impact on demand for passenger cars in Germany.
Exports dropped by 5 per cent in May to 319,000 units. In Western Europe in particular, the German manufacturers faced a sales market that remained weak. In the first five months of 2013 exports reached a volume of 1.73 million units (-4 per cent). Outside Europe, however, demand for German cars remains high. Incoming orders from abroad climbed by 8 per cent in May. On the important US market, the German group brands pushed up their May sales by around 7 per cent to almost 114,000 light vehicles.
Passenger car production in Germany last month was 4 per cent down on May 2012, to 428,900 units. German plants have produced around 2.3 million passenger cars since the beginning of this year (-5 per cent).
