German Car Manufacturers in the international Market

The German automotive industry is headed in the right direction to further expand their position as lead supplier for electric mobility. The model range of German manufacturers covers almost all vehicle segments. In absolute figures the market for electric vehicles is still small, however, it grows vigorously. Since 2007, the number of registrations of electric vehicles and thus the electric mobility in Germany and many countries has increased substantially year by year.

There are currently 29 electric models offered by German car manufacturers. By 2020, the model range and availability of competitive vehicles in the individual segments will be noticeably expanded.

Market shares of German corporate brands – Electric passenger cars vs. total passenger cars

The market share for electric cars of German manufacturers in major markets such as Western Europe, USA and Japan is generally larger than the total market share. In China, electric cars of German manufacturers are poorly represented with 5 percent market share; 90 percent of the market is dominated by domestic brands due to state regulations.

The German market shares are also converging. In the last two years alone, the electric car market share rose from 59 percent in 2016 to 66 percent. Thus, the strong total market share of 69 percent is almost reached.

This shows that German OEMs are at least as successful with electric cars as with conventional drivetrains.
