The European Union has decided to increase the 2030 EU climate target: The greenhouse gas emissions of the EU have to be reduced by 55 percent until 2030 compared to 1990 levels – instead of the previously planned 40 percent. By July 2021 the European Commission will bring forward a comprehensive package to revise the regulatory framework for European energy, climate, and transport policy. The package will include new CO2 emission performance standards for cars and vans, a revision of the alternative fuel infrastructure directive (AFID), revisions of the European emission trading system and the energy taxation directive as well as an update of the renewable energy directive (RED). The VDA outlines regulatory conditions which are decisive in order for road transport to deliver on the climate targets.
