VDA Statement regarding
Mercosur Resolution
VDA President Hildegard Müller:
"The adoption of the resolution in the European Parliament calling for a judicial review of the EU-Mercosur agreement sends a devastating signal. It could now significantly delay the agreement's entry into force, possibly even by years. There is a real risk that the Mercosur states will lose patience with the EU, jeopardizing the agreement as a whole. Despite the Parliament's decision, a ruling by the European Commission on the provisional application of the agreement is both possible and necessary. The Commission is therefore urged to quickly clarify its position on such provisional application.
Europe is weakening itself with the European Parliament's decision at a moment when geopolitical stability and reliable international partnerships are more urgent than ever. Instead of providing clarity for free trade and a rules-based world order, the Parliament is sending a signal of uncertainty and self-imposed gridlock. The EU must not sabotage its own trade objectives and must not recklessly jeopardize its credibility as a partner.
The advantages of the agreement are clear. The EU-Mercosur agreement strengthens the entire European Union. The German automotive industry is deeply integrated into European production and supply chains—therefore, every additional demand from the Mercosur region not only boosts Germany as a business location, but also stimulates value creation, trade, and employment throughout Europe.
The fact is: In times of increasing protectionism and growing geopolitical tensions, Europe needs decisiveness, not delaying tactics. This momentum must be used to strengthen alliances for open markets and create legal certainty. Blocking the EU-Mercosur agreement is irresponsible and economically short-sighted."
