Radar and lidar capable PVD coatings

Radar and lidar sensors - a necessary prerequisite for (semi-)autonomous driving - are usually a few centimeters in size and should ideally merge completely with their surroundings optically without compromising their functionality. This highly sophisticated link between function and design is achieved by radar-capable PVD (physical vapor deposition) coatings, such as those developed by the BENSELER group of companies and for which a patent application has been filed. The special feature of radar-transparent PVD surfaces is that the observer perceives them as a homogeneous metallic mirror. The transmissions required by radar and lidar can be produced with different layers of the finest structure without changing the appearance of a brand emblem or radiator grille. The BENSELER experts have also optimized the PVD process so that precision coatings in the single-digit nanometer range (molecule size) are available that can be used to produce color changes with "nano-quanta" - metallic hues of extreme luminosity.
